 History

Second to Nature was founded in 1979 in South Carolina as an in-home mastectomy fitting service. In 1990, the first Greensboro branch opened under the direction of mastectomy fitter, Leslie Brooks. When Leslie moved out of state in 1996, Ramona Hertzell took over as the owner and in-home fitter. In 2002, Ramona moved her office out of her home and opened a small fitting facility on High Point Road.

In 2002, Delores Gallagher, a Greensboro cosmetologist, realized her dream of opening a health spa centering around the special needs of women undergoing cancer treatment.  Dedicated to the memory of her brother, who had experienced hair loss during his fight with lymphoma, Delores wanted to create a special place where individuals could turn to restore a positive self image during chemotherapy treatments. Thus began A Special Place, the Triad's only boutique specializing in medical hair loss. Located at 804 Merrit Dr., across from the Old Cotton Mill Square, A Special Place offered hair replacement, hats and scarves, massage therapy, and skin care. In 2003, Second to Nature accepted the invitation to join A Special Place in order to offer a complete line of services and products in one convenient location.

Upon Delores' retirement in 2004, Jamela Hodgson, Greensboro native and certified mastectomy fitter, became owner of A Special Place. With over 20 years combined experience working with breast cancer patients and women's prosthetics, Jamela and Second to Nature owner Ramona Hertzell continued to serve cancer survivors in Greensboro.

In 2005, A Special Place and Second to Nature expanded, and moved to their present day location on historic State Street, just minutes from Moses Cone Hospital, the Regional Cancer Center, and downtown Greensboro.

In 2008. Second to Nature welcomed back Leslie Brooks as the new facility and marketing director, as well as certified fitter.
